Simon Macbeth Leeds
Everyone loved my bike and my love affair with that breathtakingly beautiful piece of metal lasted for a year, until a friend got one for Christmas. His was a newer model and 10 times better than mine. It had more gears on it and went twice as fast. For one year though, I was someone special.
Everything was wonderful about that present, apart from one thing. I unwrapped it in the kitchen, whooped with joy, and then realised that the tires were flat. My parents hadn’t bothered to pump them up. I couldn’t ride it for a month until someone finally pumped some air into my new wheels. That was so frustrating and really upset me. When you give presents you want to see them used and adored, not propped up against the radiator for weeks on end. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t want to see me ride my new bike.
I was a kid and having been given something as special as that bike, I just wanted to jump on it and play. Not sorting the tires out for so long seemed cruel. It was like winning the lottery and sticking the cash in a bank account where you have to give three months notice before you can withdraw it. Where’s the fun in that?
My Mum would spend hours in the kitchen on Christmas morning rustling up Christmas dinner and treats for us to eat in the afternoon. I was never that hungry because I would have already wolfed down the contents of the chocolate selection box I’d have been given.
After dinner, we’d always go to my Gran’s on my Mum’s side where we’d join forces with the rest of the family. My Grandparents would entertain their six offspring and associated grandchildren in their small house, which was about a mile up the road from ours. This was lovely when I was younger, but as I got older the novelty wore off and I wanted to get away and see my friends instead.
